Why grief can follow awakening
When the “room” of your old life (its walls, furniture, identities) gives way to open sky, the mind grieves the loss of familiar ground—the routines, roles, tastes, and aims that used to define you. It isn’t wrong. It’s love digesting change.
What this grief really is
- Not failure or “backsliding.”
- Not a sign you’re doing awakening wrong.
- A nervous system re-tuning as the old structures soften.
- A clearing of attachments that no longer fit the living truth that’s showing up now.
You may find that what once felt exciting—TV, certain social scenes, old ambitions—now feels transparent. The heart simply isn’t there. Let that be true.
Common traps
- “Nothing matters.” Emptiness can be misread as meaninglessness. Stay close—meaning often returns in a simpler, truer form.
- Self-judgment. “Why am I sad if I’m free?” Because the system is integrating. Let it move.
- Rushing to refill the space. The impulse to rebuild old structures is strong. Pause.
How to be with it (simple practice)
- Name it gently: “Grief is here.” No story needed.
- Feel first, think later: Sense the body spots where grief lives (throat, chest, belly).
- Allow waves: 90-second surges are normal; let them crest and pass.
- Ask one honest question: What is here for me to feel that I don’t want to feel? Sit with the silence that follows.
- Include resistance: If “I don’t want this” appears, include that too.
- Small, kind structure: Sleep, water, simple food, a short walk. Keep life gentle while it integrates.
What changes on the other side
Care and responsibility continue—often more cleanly—because action comes from presence, not performance. Connection returns at a deeper level, with people and places aligned to what’s real now. Solitude stops feeling like “being left” and starts feeling like natural rest.
